Travelling for More Than a Month? Plan Your Medication Before You Go

Repeat prescriptions are usually issued in 28 to 30-day quantities. If you are travelling longer than that, speak to your GP before you leave. Some GPs can issue up to three months at a time. It depends on your medicine and their prescribing policy.

Bring your travel dates to the pharmacy. We will check your prescription schedule and flag any medicines that need a dose adjustment across time zones, insulin and thyroid medication are common examples.

If you take a controlled drug such as morphine, diazepam, or methylphenidate, some countries require a Home Office personal licence before you travel. Others do not allow the medicine at all. Do not leave this until the week before departure. Our pharmacist can advise on the documentation you need.

If your medicine needs refrigeration, ask us about suitable travel cases and cold packs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I request my prescription online without visiting the pharmacy?

Yes. Download the Healthera app, search for Yatton Pharmacy, and request your repeat prescription from there. You can also use the NHS App if your GP uses the NHS repeat ordering system. Either way, your prescription is dispensed before you arrive.

Contact NHS 111 online first. If you cannot safely wait and your GP is closed, come in during our opening hours and we will assess your situation. We may be able to supply a short emergency course under the BNSSG Emergency Supply Service. For urgent medical issues, call 999 or go to A&E.

The standard NHS charge is £9.90 per item in 2025/26 and 2026/27. If you have more than three items regularly, a prepayment certificate will save you money. If you think you should be exempt, tell us before paying. It happens more often than you’d think. We will help you check.

We will let you know as soon as there is a supply issue. Where a national shortage protocol applies, we may be able to dispense a clinically equivalent alternative without a new prescription. For other stock issues, we will contact your GP or source the medicine through a wholesaler. We will keep you updated throughout.

Yes, hypertension is eligible for the NHS New Medicine Service. Your pharmacist will follow up around 7 to 14 days after you start, checking how you are getting on, any side effects, and whether you need any advice. It is free and takes about 10 minutes.

You need the patient’s full name and address. If they are exempt from prescription charges, bring evidence of their exemption. No letter of authority is needed for a standard NHS prescription. For controlled drugs, additional rules apply and our team will advise you at the counter.
