Viagra Connect is a pharmacy medicine available without a GP prescription after a pharmacist assessment. It contains sildenafil 50mg and is suitable for men aged 18 and over with erectile dysfunction. Our pharmacist completes a structured assessment to confirm suitability before supply. It is not suitable for men taking nitrates, nicorandil, or riociguat. One tablet is taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. It only works with sexual stimulation.
Viagra Connect covers one scenario. Many men need something different. Tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours, suits men who prefer not to time medication precisely, and is available as a 5mg daily dose. Higher doses of sildenafil may work better for some men. These require a private prescription from a registered prescriber. Our pharmacist will advise on the most appropriate route during your consultation.
ED can be caused or worsened by low testosterone or other hormonal imbalances. A blood test can check testosterone alongside LH, FSH, prolactin, glucose, and thyroid function. A blood test is not always necessary, many men do not need one. If further investigation is clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can advise on available options.
PDE5 inhibitors do not treat the psychological side of ED. If anxiety, stress, or relationship difficulties appear to be primary factors, our pharmacist will say so clearly and signpost you to NHS talking therapies, sex therapy, or relationship counselling in North Somerset. For complex cases prostate cancer treatment, pelvic surgery, or ED unresponsive to two PDE5 inhibitors at maximum dose, a GP or urology referral is the right next step
Note: Some men are eligible for NHS-funded ED treatment, including those with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, or spinal cord injury. If any of these apply to you, our pharmacist will advise on accessing NHS treatment through your GP.
All PDE5 inhibitors work the same way. They block the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which normally breaks down cGMP in the penis. Your blood pressure will be checked as part of the assessment. This is required before any PDE5 inhibitor can be supplied. During sexual stimulation, cGMP causes smooth muscle to relax and blood flow to increase. PDE5 inhibitors prevent that breakdown, making erection easier in response to arousal. They do not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.
Take approximately one hour before sex. Works for up to 4 hours at standard dose. A high-fat meal can delay onset. Available OTC as Viagra Connect 50mg, or on private prescription up to 100mg.
Take 30 minutes before sex. Works for up to 36 hours. Food does not significantly affect it. Available as a 10mg or 20mg when-required dose, or 5mg daily. Prescription only.
PDE5 inhibitors are absolutely contraindicated with all nitrate medicines, nicorandil, and riociguat. The combination causes a dangerous and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure. This applies equally to sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil. If you take any of these medicines, tell our pharmacist before your consultation.

No. Viagra Connect is a pharmacy medicine and can only be supplied after a pharmacist assessment. It takes around five to ten minutes and is a legal requirement. It also protects you from taking something that could interact with your other medications.
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra. Generic sildenafil and branded Viagra contain the same medicine. The difference is cost. Generic sildenafil is significantly cheaper and is the most cost-effective option for most men once a prescription has been issued.
It depends on which medication. If you take nitrates of any kind, you cannot safely take a PDE5 inhibitor. The combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure with no exceptions. For other heart medicines, our pharmacist will assess this with you directly. Tell us everything you take before the consultation.
No. PDE5 inhibitors work for the duration of their action window and have no lasting physical effect once they clear your system. Some men find that successfully treating ED reduces performance anxiety, which can improve natural function over time.
The minimum age is 18. There is no upper age limit, though older men with cardiovascular conditions need a more thorough assessment. ED is common in men over 50 but is increasingly seen in younger men too, often with a psychological element. Our pharmacist will assess you thoroughly regardless of age.
