Call us or walk in; bring any recent blood pressure or blood test results if you have them.
Your check takes place in a private consultation room, where the pharmacist reviews your measurements, lifestyle, and risk score at your pace.
You leave knowing your cardiovascular risk score and what it means; if anything needs following up, we will explain clearly and point you in the right direction.
The full check combines all measurements into one 20 to 30-minute appointment. At the end, you get your QRISK3 cardiovascular risk score, a percentage showing your estimated 10-year risk of heart disease or stroke. Results are explained on the day. A written summary is available to take away. Your GP practice is notified of your results and any referrals made. All conversations take place in our private consultation room.
High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms. Many people have it for years without knowing. A healthy reading is generally below 120/80 mmHg. A reading above 140/90 mmHg on two separate occasions is classed as hypertension. If your reading is elevated, our pharmacist will advise whether you need a repeat measurement or a GP referral.
Already diagnosed with hypertension and being treated for it? You are not eligible for the NHS Health Check. Your blood pressure is managed through your GP.
Cholesterol is checked with a finger-prick blood test. Results are ready within minutes. We measure your total cholesterol and your HDL cholesterol. The ratio between these two figures feeds into your QRISK3 risk score. High cholesterol has no symptoms. It narrows artery walls silently over years, raising the risk of heart attack and stroke. A raised result does not automatically mean medication. It depends on your overall risk score.
Your height and weight are measured to calculate your BMI. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is generally healthy. A BMI of 25 or above is overweight. A BMI of 30 or above is classed as obese. Waist circumference is also measured, as abdominal fat carries a higher cardiovascular risk than fat stored elsewhere. A waist above 88cm in women or 102cm in men is associated with increased health risk.
QRISK3 brings together your blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, waist measurement, age, sex, ethnicity, smoking status, family history, and lifestyle to produce a single percentage. A score of 10% means roughly a 1 in 10 chance of a cardiovascular event in the next 10 years. A score of 20% or more particularly warrants a GP referral to discuss treatment options. Lower scores may also lead to referral depending on individual risk factors.
For patients aged 65 and over, dementia awareness is included in the NHS Health Check. This is not a memory test or a diagnostic assessment. It is a conversation about what dementia is, what early signs can look like, and where to get support if you have concerns. Many cardiovascular risk factors also increase dementia risk. If you or a family member have concerns about memory, our pharmacist can point you to local memory services in North Somerset.
From 2026, women aged 40 to 55 attending an NHS Health Check will be asked questions about menopause and perimenopause symptoms. Those reporting symptoms will be directed to information and treatment options, including HRT. The specific questions are being developed with clinical input as part of a national rollout by local authorities. This is the first time menopause has been formally included in the NHS Health Check programme.
Your health and safety are our top priorities. From proper vaccine storage to strict hygiene and confidential consultations, we ensure you’re protected every step.
Coronary heart disease develops when arteries narrow due to fatty deposits. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity all contribute. The NHS Health Check measures these risk factors and calculates your 10-year risk using QRISK3. If your risk is high, our pharmacist will refer you to your GP to discuss whether a statin or blood pressure medication is appropriate.
High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. The NHS Health Check screens for this directly and includes stroke risk in your QRISK3 score. If your blood pressure or risk score is elevated, a GP referral follows. Treatment at that stage can significantly reduce your stroke risk before anything happens.
Type 2 diabetes is strongly linked to weight, physical inactivity, ethnicity, and family history. Early stages have no symptoms. The health check assesses your diabetes risk using the QDiabetes tool. If your risk is raised, a blood glucose or HbA1c test may be arranged. Early detection allows referral to the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, which has strong evidence for preventing progression.
Chronic kidney disease often progresses without symptoms for years. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are its two main causes. The NHS Health Check does not directly test kidney function. However, by assessing blood pressure and diabetes risk, our pharmacist can identify patients who should be referred for an eGFR kidney function blood test through their GP.
The NHS Health Check raises awareness of dementia in patients aged 65 and over. It is not a memory test and does not screen for or diagnose dementia. Patients with possible signs of cognitive impairment will be signposted to local memory services in North Somerset for further assessment. Many cardiovascular risk factors also increase the risk of vascular dementia.
You qualify if you are aged 40 to 74 and have not had an NHS Health Check in the last five years. There are also several pre-existing conditions that make you ineligible, because if you already have these conditions, you should already be under active management through your GP.

Yes, completely free. The appointment, finger-prick blood test, measurements, and risk score calculation are all covered. If further tests or treatment are needed afterwards, standard NHS rules apply to those separately.
No. If you have a diagnosed hypertension condition and are already on medication for it, you are not eligible. The programme is for people not yet identified as at risk or being treated. Your GP will already be monitoring you as part of your ongoing care.
Not usually. The finger-prick tests used do not require fasting. If your results flag elevated blood sugar, our pharmacist may recommend a follow-up fasting test with your GP for a more accurate reading.
A high score does not mean a heart attack is coming. It means your risk is elevated compared to others your age. Our pharmacist will explain which factors are contributing most and whether you need to see your GP. Most people who take action on a high score can bring it down meaningfully.
The clinical content is identical. The difference is practical. The pharmacy has more flexible slots and no GP referral is needed. The outcome, your QRISK3 score, results summary, and any referrals, is exactly the same.
Not under the NHS programme. Health checks are offered every five years. If you have specific concerns in the meantime, ask about private health checks or individual tests. Standalone NHS Blood Pressure Checks are also available at our pharmacy free of charge at any time.
We share health tips and travel advice. Stay informed about safety and managing medicine.
Most people who come in feel fine. That is exactly the point. A free 20-minute check can pick up things you would never notice on your own. Come in, get your results on the same day, and leave knowing where you stand.
