NHS Flu Vaccination: Free for Eligible Patients

If you qualify for the NHS flu programme, your jab is completely free. No GP registration needed. Walk in or book online. The programme typically runs from 1 October through to 31 March. Pregnant women can access the jab from 1 September. Eligible groups include adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, adults under 65 with certain long-term health conditions, care home residents, main carers, and people living with someone who has a weakened immune system.

Private flu vaccinations are available to adults aged 18 and over. No detailed medical history is required beyond the brief pre-vaccination check.

NHS COVID-19 Vaccination: Seasonal, Eligible Patients Only

The NHS offers a seasonal COVID-19 vaccination to those most at risk. Eligibility is narrower than the flu programme and changes each year based on JCVI advice. The autumn/winter 2025/26 COVID campaign ended 31 January 2026. The spring 2026 programme covers immunosuppressed patients aged 6 months and over, running 13 April to 30 June 2026. Check current eligibility at nhs.uk or ask at the pharmacy. We will confirm whether we are commissioned to deliver the active programme.

Flu and COVID Together: One Visit, Two Vaccinations

When the NHS COVID programme runs alongside the flu programme, eligible patients can have both vaccinations in a single visit. The NHS actively encourages co-administration. It is clinically safe and saves you a separate trip. The flu vaccine can also be given alongside the shingles vaccine. Co-administration with the RSV vaccine is not usually recommended, though your pharmacist can advise on timing if you need both.

Who Should Get the Flu Jab?

The flu vaccine takes up to 14 days to take full effect. Flu typically peaks in December and January. Getting vaccinated in October or early November gives you the best protection when you need it most. The NHS adult programme starts on 1 October each year.

The flu virus changes every year. Last year’s jab does not protect you this year. Pregnant women can book from 1 September. The campaign runs until 31 March — if you miss October, it is still worth getting vaccinated later in the season.

Flu Vaccine Side Effects

These usually pass within one to two days and do not require treatment. The injected flu vaccine contains inactivated virus particles and cannot give you flu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book in advance for my NHS flu jab?

Walk-ins are welcome throughout flu season. Booking via Healthera or the NHS App means you pick your time and avoid any wait. During October and November we get busy, so booking ahead is the better option if you can.

Yes, every year. The flu virus mutates between seasons and the vaccine is updated annually to match. Last year’s vaccine will not protect you against this year’s strains, and protection fades over time.

It depends on the severity. Some vaccines contain trace egg protein, others do not. Our pharmacist will check your allergy history before vaccinating and advise on the right formulation. If you have had anaphylaxis to egg in the past, let us know before you come in.

Yes. When both programmes run at the same time, you can have both jabs in a single visit. They are given in different arms. If you are unsure whether you are currently eligible for the NHS COVID vaccine, ask at the pharmacy or check nhs.uk.

Yes. We offer a private flu vaccination for anyone aged 18 and over not covered by the NHS programme. The vaccine is the same inactivated flu vaccine. Ask at the pharmacy for current pricing.

If you have a high temperature, wait until it settles first. A mild cold or cough without a temperature is not a reason to delay. If you are unsure, call us on 01934 832236 before coming in.
