Call us on +44 1934832236 or walk in; it helps to know your expected period date before you come in.
Our pharmacist checks your suitability in a private room, goes through contraindications, and answers any questions you have.
If norethisterone is suitable, tablets are dispensed the same day with clear written instructions on how to take them.
During Ramadan, Hajj, and other religious observances, having a period can affect prayer, fasting, and participation in activities. Period delay tablets are a widely used and clinically appropriate option. The assessment is the same as for any other reason. Speak to our pharmacist in private. No additional information is required from you.
Competitive athletes, marathon runners, swimmers, and women in endurance events sometimes find their cycle affects training or performance on the day. Period delay is a practical option around planned sporting events. As with all assessments, our pharmacist will confirm your suitability and discuss any relevant considerations based on your health history.
There are two main approaches to delaying a period. The right one depends on whether you are currently taking the combined contraceptive pill and whether you have enough time to begin treatment.
Norethisterone is the only medicine licensed in the UK specifically for period delay. It keeps progesterone levels elevated, preventing the womb lining from shedding. Take one 5mg tablet three times daily, starting at least 3 days before your period is expected. The maximum course is 90 tablets, allowing a delay of up to 27 days. Your period will usually return 2 to 3 days after stopping. Under our PGD, this service is available no more than once every 6 months.
Remember: Norethisterone is not a contraceptive. Continue your usual contraception throughout.
If you take a monophasic combined contraceptive pill, you may be able to delay your period by running packs back to back, skipping the 7-day pill-free interval and starting a new pack immediately. This does not involve norethisterone and is supported by FSRH guidance. It does not work with biphasic or triphasic pills. It does not work with the progestogen-only pill (mini pill). Speak to our pharmacist to confirm whether this applies to your specific pill.
You do not need a specific reason to ask about period delay. Some women simply want to understand their options before deciding anything. Our pharmacist can walk you through both approaches, explain what each involves, and help you decide what suits your situation. All consultations take place in a private room. Nothing is shared without your consent.
The table below covers the main inclusion and exclusion criteria. Your pharmacist will carry out a full assessment based on your health, medical history, and current medicines before anything is supplied.

You must start at least 3 days before your period is due. Starting any closer may not give the tablets enough time to work. Book your consultation as early as possible, ideally a week or more before your period is expected.
No. The mini pill is not compatible with norethisterone. Taking both together increases progestogen levels and the risk of side effects. Speak to your GP about switching to the combined pill in advance, or discuss your options with our pharmacist.
Some women notice a slightly heavier first bleed after stopping. This is common and usually settles within one or two normal cycles. If bleeding is severe or prolonged, contact your GP.
It depends on the type. Women who experience migraine with aura cannot take norethisterone. Women with migraine without aura may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Your pharmacist will ask about this during the consultation and will not supply the tablets if there is any doubt.
Under our Patient Group Direction, this service can only be provided once every 6 months. If you need to delay your period more regularly, a longer-term solution like the combined pill may be more suitable. Your GP can advise on this.
Your period should return within 2 to 3 days of your last tablet. If it has not come back within 7 days, take a pregnancy test. Remember, norethisterone is not a contraceptive. If the test is positive or your period still has not returned, contact your GP.
