The causes of premature ejaculation are not fully understood, but research indicates they result from a combination of factors: neurological, hormonal, psychological and relational. Most men with the condition experience a mix of these rather than a single identifiable cause.
Dapoxetine is the only medicine licensed in the UK specifically for premature ejaculation. It is a short-acting SSRI taken 1 to 3 hours before sexual activity. The starting dose is 30mg, increasing to 60mg if needed and well tolerated. No more than one dose in 24 hours. For men aged 18 to 64. Clinical studies show it can increase ejaculation time two to threefold. Generic dapoxetine replaced the Priligy brand after the patent expired in October 2025.
Critical interactions: Dapoxetine must not be combined with PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil), other SSRIs or SNRIs, or MAOIs. Do not drink alcohol on the same day. Tell our pharmacist about all current medications before your consultation.
EMLA cream contains lidocaine 25mg/g and prilocaine 25mg/g. Applied to the penis 15 to 30 minutes before sex, it reduces sensitivity and delays ejaculation. It must be wiped off thoroughly before intercourse to avoid transferring anaesthetic to your partner. EMLA is oil-based and weakens latex condoms. Its use for PE is off-label but widely used in clinical practice. A prescription is required. It is a useful option for men who cannot take dapoxetine.
Not every case of PE needs medication. Behavioural techniques, psychological support, or a combination may be more appropriate for some men. Our pharmacist can discuss all options during the consultation. If a GP referral or psychosexual therapist would serve you better than a prescription, we will say so clearly.
PE affects up to 1 in 3 men at some point in their lives. It is the most common male sexual dysfunction by prevalence. Fewer than 10% of affected men seek treatment, not because the condition is rare, but because many assume nothing can be done. PE is well understood, well researched, and treatable. Neither treatment available at Yatton Pharmacy requires a GP visit or specialist referral.
The ejaculatory reflex involves peripheral nerves and central serotonin pathways. In men with lifelong PE, the threshold for this reflex is lower than average. This is neurological, not voluntary. Other contributors include penile hypersensitivity, thyroid dysfunction, prostatitis, and low testosterone or serotonin levels. Acquired PE can also be triggered by a urinary tract infection or by starting or stopping certain medications.
Performance anxiety is one of the most common drivers of acquired PE. A single episode can create a cycle of anxiety that becomes self-reinforcing. Stress, relationship tension, and depression all contribute. In some men, PE developed early in their sexual history and has persisted. This pattern often benefits from psychological support alongside any pharmacological treatment, rather than medication alone.
PE can lead to avoidance of sex, reduced intimacy, and distress for both partners. Many men withdraw from physical contact to avoid the problem, while partners feel unable to raise it without making things worse. Accessing treatment confidentially and locally removes a significant barrier. Where relationship dynamics are a major factor, couples counselling or psychosexual therapy can be a valuable addition to physical treatment.

They are the same medicine. Priligy was the brand name. The patent expired in October 2025 and generic dapoxetine is now available, containing the same active ingredient at the same dose. It is typically less expensive.
No. Combining dapoxetine with any PDE5 inhibitor can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Tell our pharmacist if you use any ED medication before your consultation. EMLA cream may be a more appropriate option in your situation.
Apply a small amount to the underside of the head of the penis 15 to 30 minutes before sexual activity. Wipe all the cream off thoroughly before intercourse. EMLA is oil-based and weakens latex condoms, so use polyurethane or non-latex condoms if needed.
Try up to six doses at 30mg before drawing conclusions. A single occasion does not give a reliable picture. If 30mg is well tolerated but not effective, the dose can be increased to 60mg. If 60mg still does not help after six doses, come back and speak to our pharmacist.
In most cases, no. Most men with PE have no underlying physical condition. However, if PE comes on suddenly or is accompanied by urinary discomfort or pelvic pain, see your GP rather than managing it with pharmacy treatment alone.
