A repeat prescription is a prescription for medicine that you take regularly, where your GP has agreed that you can request further supplies without needing an appointment each time. This makes it easier to keep on top of long term treatment and avoid running out of essential medicines.
Put simply, the repeat prescription meaning is that your GP has already approved ongoing supplies of a particular medicine for a set period of time. You still need to request the medicine when you are running low, but you do not need to see the GP for every refill unless they ask to review your treatment.
Once you have nominated Yatton Pharmacy for electronic prescriptions, your GP can send your repeat prescription to us electronically. You then order in the usual way through your GP practice, the NHS App, or their online service, and we will receive the prescription and prepare your medicines for you to collect or have delivered.
Yes. When you nominate us as your chosen pharmacy, we can help you keep track of your repeat prescriptions, arrange collection from local surgeries, and provide free local delivery where needed. Our pharmacists can also review your medicines with you and answer any questions about how and when to take them.
It is recommended that you request a repeat prescription several working days before you are due to run out of medicine, to give your GP surgery time to issue the prescription and for the pharmacy to prepare it. Ordering in good time helps prevent gaps in your treatment.
Some prescriptions are issued as one off, for example short courses of antibiotics or medicines that need closer monitoring. In these cases you may need to contact your GP surgery directly if you need more. If you are unsure whether a medicine can go on a repeat prescription, our pharmacy team can explain the process and signpost you back to your GP if needed.
GPs and pharmacists regularly review repeat prescriptions to make sure your medicines are still right for you, are working well, and remain safe to use. Sometimes doses are adjusted, medicines are stopped, or alternatives are prescribed. If anything on your repeat prescription changes and you are not sure why, speak to our pharmacist and we can help explain or advise you to contact your GP.
